So You’re Adulting | Movies to Watch when Adulting Gets Hard

Graduation season is almost over, and for most it’s an exciting experience to journey on what’s ahead. But for some, it could be scary.

Suddenly you’re adulting. The term has been overly used for quite some time now. In a formal term, Oxford Dictionary defined adulting as “the practice of behaving in a way characteristic of a responsible adult, especially the accomplishment of mundane but necessary tasks.”

So basically, it means being responsible for doing tasks you didn’t have to do as a kid; i.e: budgeting, paying the bills, getting excited over house appliances, and most importantly, getting a stable job.

Whether you’ve been adulting for a year now or two months, I’m sure, in one way or another, you’ve gone through a quarter-life existential crisis (sort of). And trust me when I say, we get it. We’re on the same boat, too.

So when adulting seems to be eating you up, and you feel like there are more questions than answers in your head, or when life seems to not go as planned, it’s important to take a break. Give yourself some space to breathe.

If you’re in the same boat as us, here are some movies that can help you ease that heavy feeling. You’ll find yourself in one of these movies or, better yet, it can give you inspiration or simply give you the motivation you need.

WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS

This movie is a little bit heavy. However, this is a film with a classic coming-of-age premise about being torn between following your dreams and being forced to grow up. Zac’s character is a young DJ, trying to make a name for himself. However, faced with the problems that come with growing up, he’s stuck between struggling to make his dreams come true and enjoy being young or continuing to take the conventional path to adulthood.

Watch this movie if: you’re losing inspiration or having doubts in pursuing your passions. At some point, we all have to grow up and take responsibility but it doesn’t mean you can’t learn from your failures and completely turn away from what you wish to become. One of my favorite quotes from this film is when one of the characters said, “Are we ever gonna be better than this?

GET A JOB

On a lighter note, Get a Job is a comedy movie that shows the reality of fresh graduates trying to enter the workforce. Although it has a cliche theme of being stuck between the need to be a grown-up and following your passions, it’s nice to see how reality is mirrored in this movie. It’s refreshing to see how these animated characters tackle and overcome grown-up problems like paying bills, getting out of student loans, and actually getting a job.

Watch this movie if: you’re feeling a little down about not getting your dream job just yet or if you’re stuck in a job you don’t really like. There’s no doubt that in some way or another, you’ll connect with the characters in this movie, and maybe, you might get a little inspiration from it.

HOW TO BE SINGLE

Don’t be fooled by its title. This is not another romantic-comedy movie. In fact, it’s not a romantic movie at all. It’s all about growing up and being independent. Dakota Johnson plays a character who has always been dependent on someone–either a boyfriend or her parents. And now, she just wishes to know what’s out there on her own.

Watch this movie if: you’re at a point in life where you just want to feel a little independence or you’re feeling a little down that you’re the only single girl in your friend group, this is a good movie to watch (where’s my strong, independent women at?).

Conquer adulting single and strong, and show everyone that you don’t need a man to be alright!

TWENTY

Now don’t dismiss this movie just because it’s not from Hollywood. This Korean movie is very relatable and there’s no doubt that anyone in their twenties has been to this point in their life–if not literally, then maybe emotionally.

There’s a line in the movie, “Everyone says that it’s a great time for us, but it feels like it’s so empty…” We’ve all been there, a little lost, a little confused, a little stuck in the middle not knowing what we want in life. Most of us are scared to let go of our youth, and some are in the midst of making hard choices.

However, this film serves as a reminder that enjoying yourself is not a bad thing, and it’s okay to take your time to figure things out. Kim Woo-bin, Lee Jun-ho, and Kang Ha-neul were amazing in portraying their respective roles, and guaranteed, you’ll have a great laugh and a light heart after watching it.

Watch this movie if: you’re in your twenties and you feel like you’re just not living your best life; if everything seems cloudy; if you just want a good laugh. The fact that it’s an hour of watching cute Korean guys helps too.
